What is a passing TB test result? ›

The test is "negative" if there is no bump (or only a very small bump) at the spot where the fluid was injected. A negative TB skin test usually means that you don't have TB. In some situations, you may need to have another TB skin test later.

If you have an Mtb infection, the skin around the injection site should start to swell and harden within 48 to 72 hours . This bump, or induration, may also change color. But the induration's size, not the color, will determine your results. An induration of less than 5 millimeters (mm) is a negative result.

If your skin test is POSITIVE: You have TB germs in your body. The test does not tell whether you have inactive TB or active TB disease. You will need other tests, such as a physical examination, chest x-ray, and lab work to determine if you have active TB disease.

How do I get my TB skin test results? You must come back to our office 48 to 72 hours after your TB skin test is placed to have it read by a nurse. If you are unable to return within 72 hours during our clinic hours, the test will be invalid. You will have to pay again to be retested.

Results. Redness alone at the skin test site usually means you haven't been infected with TB bacteria. A firm red bump may mean you have been infected with TB bacteria at some time. The size of the firm bump (not the red area) is measured 2 to 3 days after the test to find out the result.

An induration of 5 or more millimeters is considered positive in: People with HIV. Recent contacts of people with infectious TB disease. People with chest x-ray findings suggestive of previous TB disease.

To examine the results of the tuberculin test, the doctor will study the amount of induration on the skin using a millimetre scale. For individuals with a healthy immune system, an induration equal to or exceeding 15mm is considered a positive TB skin test.

For the test, a health care worker will take some blood (less than a teaspoon) from your vein. The blood is then sent to a lab for testing. How soon will I have my test result? The test result will be available in 5–7 days.

Positive TST after 3 weeks.

If the first TST is carried out at more than 3 weeks after exposure, a positive result might be due to either (i) prior infection, (ii) BCG vaccination, (iii) boosting, or (iv) the recent transmission.

However, even use of the preferred skin test technique (intradermal injection of purified protein derivative via the Mantoux method) can lead to either false positive or false negative results.

What not to do before a TB test? ›

You don't any special preparations for TB skin test or a TB blood test.

TB skin testing is done by a qualified health person by injecting a small amount of serum under the skin. If there are TB germs in a person's body, the serum reacts with those TB germs and that causes a bump on the skin.

If you have a negative skin test, you need a repeat test at least once every four years. If you have a documented positive skin test, you must have an initial chest X-ray. After that, you still need to be screened every four years.

People who had a TB vaccination might get a positive test even if they have no infection. A negative test means that your body didn't react to the test. It doesn't necessarily mean you don't have an infection.
